Another Philly crew, more hardcore I would say, please make place and noise for YDI!!!

1) How was YDI born into this marvelous world?

SATANS SPERM REACH THE ALMIGHTY DESTINATION AND THIS
STINKING EARTH WAS BLESSED WITH OUR DIVINE PRESENCE

1a) Why this name?

(QUOTE) "TO MIX LIES WITH THE TRUTH" (END QUOTE)

2) Did you see Pure Hell live?

I SAW THEM TWICE. FIRST TIME HOWARD (YDI) PLAYED W/
THEN @ THE BALCONY 2002 IN PHILLY AND THEY REACHED
LEVELS THEY NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE. WE (YDI) PLAYED
WITH THEM 2003 @ THE BALCONY. BRIAN (YDI GUITAR YDI
FORMER BASS PLAYER YDI) SAW THEM PLAY WITH THE DEAD
BOYS IN 1979 @ THE HOT CLUB IN PHILLY (ORIGINAL LINEUP
SANS HOWARD)

2a) Do you have 45T or EPs of them especially the "No
Rules"/ "These
> Boots Are Made For Walking"?

NO I DON'T HAVE THEM BUT HEARD THEM & THEY WERE
FUCKIN' GREAT -- THEY PLAYED WITH THE DEAD BOYS AND
THE NEW YORK FUCKIN' DOLLS -- HOW CAN YOU TOP THAT?
THEY WERE WAY AHEAD OF THEY'RE TIME..THEY WERE
PIONEERS, THEY ARE LEGENDS.

3)In London we talked about Venom, how did you know
them/meet them ?

FUCKIN' VENOM MAN WERE THE - FUCKIN'-SHIT!!!! I
BOUGHT FUCKIN' "WELCOME TO HELL" IN 1981. THEY WERE
THE BEST FUCKIN' BAND ON THE ENITIRE EARTH. NO NE CAN
EVER TOUCH THEM. I ANI'T NEVER HEARD NO SHIT LIKE
THAT.

WE CORRESPONDED WITH THEM IN 1983 AND I STILL HAVE THE
REPLY FROM THEIR SECRETARY. WE LOVE LOVE FUCKIN'
VENOM!!!!

I FINALLY GOT TO MEET CRONOS @ THE TROCODARO IN 2006
WHEN THEY SET THE STAGE AFIRE. I DID SEE THEM IN 1983
@ PARAMOUNT THEATRE IN LONG ISLAND, NY -- THE ORIGINAL
LINEUP/ CRONOS, MANTIS AND ABBADON. OH BY THE WAY A
PIP-SQUEEK BAND NAMED METALLICA OPENEDD UP FOR THEM.

4) If you had to compare Philly hardcore punk(of 80-86
especially) scene with those from Washington DC,
Boston, New York what would you say?

FIRSTLY, HC ENDED IN '84. I'VE BEEN TO DC 3 TIMES AND
IT WAS THE MOST INTENSE. NEVER BEEN TO BOSTON. NYC
WAS ALWAYS A GREAT FUCKIN' TIME.

5) let's start talking about early 80ies Philly scene,
what would you say about Brubaker
two all beef patties
double mohawk special sauce , pickles, cheese stacked
on a sesame seed bun, Circle Of Shit wipe again!

And the record shop CHAOS? Bought a record there many dead
brain cells ago!

6) Do you remember the Longmarch Hall show (Fall 1983) with Void, Iron Cross,
Antidote, Necros, Rude Awakening and YDI ?

I remember I saw The Evil Dead first that night at the
Goldman Theatre got weeded up and went to the show
pumped! I got up on stage and I felt like I was
possesed by demons! AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! "You will
die like the others before you!" " Join us!"

7) What happened to these bands: Ruin, Mc Rad, Electric Love
Muffin, Flag Of Democracy, Scram, Homo Picnic, Dead
Milkmen?

McRad and FOD are still playing. I don’t
know what happened to the others.

Did you play with each one?

We played with Ruin,FOD, and McRad in
the good ol days.

8) Back to YDI, what were your
influences back in the days?

Alice Cooper, The Stooges,
Negative Approach, Iron Cross, Venom, Black Flag, Bad
Brains, Venom, The Misfits, The Meatmen and Venom. I
know I said Venom thrice. I like Venom!

Did you play
in other bands before?

I played with a band called The Legion of
Decency with Nikki Bones. Orginal Y di lineup was
Jackal vocals, Mike guitar, Howard drums , and Chuck
bass.

Who was writing music, who was writing lyrics?

Mike was
writing the music,Jackal and Mike were writing the
lyrics

What did you release?

Two songs for Get Off
Our Back We’ll Do it Our selves” Philly Hardcore
Compilation lp on Red Records in 1983. The “A Place In
the Sun “ 7” ep in 1983 on our own Blood bubble
records. In 1985 we released a full length lp entitled
“Black Dust” on Blood bubble records. Line up was
Jackal vocals Mike guitar Nikki bass and Eric drums.

How many shows for YDI?

83-84 era we did abour 40 shows. Our biggest were with
Minor Threat at Great Gildersleeves in New York 1983 ,
The Meatmen at Longmarch in Philly 1984 and the debut
Samhain show at the Rock Hotel in New York 1984, 85- 88 maybe about 7 shows

Did you tour USA
or anywhere else?
No

Why did you split, and then come back?

Mike went to Arizona
to raise a family. Several years later evil manifested
and Nikki switched from bass to guitar, thus the
return of Y di. We are still in contact with Mike and
Howard our original drummer is back with us! You see
we are like Michael Meyers you can’t kill us! We just
keep coming back!

9) Let's talk about our good friend Frank Rizzo ( you made a song about
him after all) and Philadelphia police crews...

Frank Rizzo (mayor) was an embarrassment to this city,
and the police were known for their corruption and
racism, Rizzo was the catalyst for the closing of the
original Electric Factory concert hall at 21st and
Cherry Sts. in Phildelphia. During the sixties the
Electric Factory hosted young upcoming acts like Jimi
Hendrix, The Who, and The Stooges!Rizzo’s made a
point to close this public nuisance as he saw it. You
see Saul that is the antithesis of the Philadelphia
music scene. A local loudmouth cop rises to power and
closes a cultural mecca of the sixties and is revealed
as a hero in this awful town.

10) You seem to be a Misfits / Samhain fanatic, did you
see them on stage (in the 80ies, not nowadays)?

Hell yeah! I first saw the Misfits in 1981 at the East Side
Club in Philly. I bought the” 3 hits from Hell “single
and Nikki and I went to check them out. I had no idea
what they look like because on the single all you
could see was there eyes. When they came on stage I
couldn’t fucken believe it! I had never seen nothing
like it. Those guys were fucken frightening! Jerry and
Doyle were fucken twin towers of death! Giant metal
spikes on black leather long black devil locks, and
Jerrry had a fucken skull on the end of his bass!
Glenn look like some evil black rat gnarling
gnashing! They freaked me the fuck out! Everyone has
seen pictures of the Misfits now but back then there
weren’t many magazines that covered punk or the
Misfits so you could imagine how shocked I was when I
first saw them! I was blown away! Everyone was! I saw
them again at Irving Plaza in 1981 in New York “Walk
Among Us” era and then in Philly at Love Hall in 1983
“Earth AD” Robo! Era .

How would you describe Glen Danzig's frame of mind?
Dark, intense, intelligent..

You also seem to like Freddy Krueger's glove, do you
collect horror/sci-fi comics and movies?

Our producer(Tim Lloyd) for the Black Dust album made that
glove. It’s real !He hand made it and welded knives on
with a blow torch just like Freddy! I use to collect
comics and go to comic book conventions in the early
70’s , My favorite comics were Vampirella . Mister
Miracle, Conan the Barbarian, The Shadow, Swamp Thing
, Ghost Rider Kamandi and Nick Fury to name a few. My
favorite comic artists were Bernie Wrightson, Barry
Smith , Mike Kuluta,, Jim Steranko , Jack Kirby and
Frank Frazetta. I lost touch of what’s going on now
because comics were cheap back then only 15 cents to
25 cents, at the most 75 cents. Now its like 3 bucks
for one comic book! I do them Spawn is great and so is
Wolverine.

11) What is Voodoo Metal ?
Shit that makes your skin
crawl!

12) Back to the town of Philadelphia (and the area), what was it like in the
70ies and 80ies?

Philly in the 70’s and 80’s kind of
sucked but rent was cheap and you had some punk venues
that were cool. But you still had corrupt police and
politicians, slumlords, crime, and the local Philly
tribe of loser sports fans.

Did you witness for
example the rising of Gamble & Huff's Sound Of Philadelphia (and
Disco)?

Never liked Gamble & Huff of disco. I was
into funk and soul. Funkadelic and James Brown.

Or did you attend movie theaters which would
screen blaxploitation movies?

I used to go to those
blaxploitation movies all the time! I saw Shaft,
Shaft’s Big Score.Shaft goes to Africa, Coffy,
Superfly, Superfly TNT and Blacula. They would play at
the Goldman theatre in Philly at 16th and Market St,
Those movies were rate “R” no one under 17 allowed
without company of an adult. My cousins and I were
10-12 years old but we always got in! The theatre was
full of black people and would marijuana smoke was
thick! Everyone had a great time!

There also were
some
movements like the BPP
section and Move, to name a few...

Too young to remember The Black Panthers but I thought they look
cool! Move was sad. I felt sorry for the children
caught in the crossfire of the police. Sort of like
the Waco incident.

13) What do you think about magazines like Ebony, Jet,
Essence...

Articles are boring but the women are hot!
Howard(Y di) has a daughter who posed for the Jett
magazine centerfold a few years ago, Her name is Vanna
Black,Check out www.vannablack.com

14) Nowadays what can people find in Philly musically?
A band called Necktie are great!

15) Could it be said that YDI and Negative Approach
started what would be called Oi! core ? Yes!
16) I mention several bands and you tell me the first
thing you think about them : Dead
kennedys,(Homosexuals)
Crucifix,(Shrimp fried rice) Verbal Abuse(President
Bush
), Negative Approach(Awesome!), Reagan
Youth(Rick Samtorium), The Freeze(Mister,) Iron
Cross(Powerful!), Social Distorsion,(They suck!) 7
Seconds (I hate sports too!)

17) What about the CBGB
gig supporting Bad
Brains in November 2006?

Great show! Played with one of all time favorite bands
of the world! The Bad Brains they are the real deal!
